We learn through the storyline in AoC that your character actually is someone of at least moderate power and infamy. Or was, at least, before becoming a slave. Is it pheasable to be a queen? Probably not. But it's certainly pheasable to have been someone of import at one time or another.
This isn't a singleplayer game, they can not force a storyline onto RPers, likewise, you can not use that storyline to defend a backstory that doesn't include it. To be royalty is very unlikely. A lot of people would recognize you (that is, if NPC's could do anything but do their scripts), being sold into slavery unnoticed by anyone else important is very far fetched as well.

You mean like hiding a child destined to save the universe from his evil father on said father's birth planet and not changing the child's surname? >.>

We're playing a game people, having fun, not competing for winner of the best script to be made into the next blockbuster motion picture. Write what you want to write, play your character how you want to play it. It's your dollar.

I hate it when people come up with the rebuttal "Let's not have opinions as to not make anyone cry!"

Got nothing to do with making people cry or not. It's all about people are getting their panties in a bunch because other people aren't playing by their ideal of what the rules should be. So now there's lenghty threads instructing others on the correct way to do things.

Does it really disturb people so much they have to write how many threads on what is the proper way to Rp and to write backstories? Loosen the bone, Pebbles. Is it really going to ruin your game on your side of the yard if someone on the other side of the playground is playing something you don't approve of?

Opinions...yea, I can see that. People that are ripping off their shirts and beating their chests like Nightsbane are just as full of drama as those they accuse others of being.

You'll notice that I said "someone of import". That doesn't mean royalty. That means someone of some importance. What that means is up to the reader, I guess. In the end though, you're doing little more than applying your subjective opinion to others as though it were fact.

Also, if you bothered to read any of the quest dialogue in AoC, you'll see that various NPC's do recognize you. So the potential, again, for one's character to have been someone of at least mild importance, is there. Me personally, I prefer my characters to be nobodies. They weren't important before, they aren't now, and they won't be in the future, unless the story just unfolds that way. But if someone wants to take some liberties, what does it hurt you?

At any rate, I'm out of this discussion. There won't be any agreement, and there's really no need to keep debating.

I can't say the steak is undercooked when it was, if I'm not a cook myself? I can't say that a book over-explained every detail if I'm not a writer? What messed up world are you living in?
Yes you can, nothing wrong with that.

But I would say the general idea behind asking, say, literary critics to write a novel before commenting on the shortcomings of others is "let us see you do better", sort of the old "those who can't, teach".

My guess is that if literary critics tried to write a novel, the general reaction to it would be that it is "academic", namely, not without talent, but purely by the numbers in a highbrow sort of way.

EDIT: Did I just reply to a 12-day-old post?

Fact: The Mary Sue character type exists.
Fact: It is poor writing.
Fact: A writer cannot get better when they are not aware that they wrote something poorly.
Fact: Nightsbane is infamous for writing inflammatory posts and thinly veiled anti-RP posts by now.
Fact: Having such a reputation discredits a poster, no matter the context of the discussion.
Thesis: The combination of the known Mary Sue problem and the identity of the OP messes this discussion up somewhat fiercely, as a good number of people simply cannot trust anything Nightsbane said and thus become defensive, which in turn causes those who can/don't care about/don't know the OP to become defensive in response.
