Default Set

I'm on Set, and have the 10k latency bug. Randomly pretty much.

Intel Duo 3.2Ghz
3 Gb Mem
8800 GT

ISP: No-name, but located in Southeast, GA

Think it's more on funcom side, since my connection is always rock solid.

In all honesty I really do not believe they will fix it within the 30 free days, first of all they have not even acknowledged the problem, Secondly they are only now hiring the staff to fix the tech problems. Thirdly, unfortunately this is just one of many game breaking bugs they have going. Lastly, up until now bug fixes have taken a back seat to content/balance issues, so they don't exactly have their priorities straightened out.

From here you can get a pretty good picture of how long this will take to fix. Sorry guys, I'm jumping off this sinking ship.

I also have this issue.

1. Where you are located - Bangkok, Thailand
2. ISP you are using - True
3. Server you're on - Deathwhisper
4. What you were doing at the time of the spike - Anything and Everything
5. Estimate of the time it happened at - Completely random and totally unpredictable.
6. How long does it last - Until a full minute passes without anything on my screen changing and I log out in disgust.

It is NOT:

It is instead a big Grey issue.

I'm sure many thousands of users who are routing via Level3 are fine, but it is much more complicated than say "I/My friend go via Level3 and they don't lag, so therefore it's not Level3."

It is more accurate to state that "When routing via Level3, the lag is more likely to occur." Not "When routing via Level3, lag WILL occur."

And yes, I do blame your ISP for your issues, Dodo are the worst ISP in Australia, and it can be expected because they are the cheapest too.

On the other hand, just because this 10K lag happens MOST OFTEN with Level3, does not mean it will never happen via another route.

Considering that almost EVERY SINGLE traceroute with the lag was via Level3, except yours, it would be safe to say that your situation is caused by some other factor/routing issue, but the rest of us are affected BECAUSE OF Level3.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling, I have my fix and I'm just trying to help and hope Funcom pays attention.

PS: Funcom on the Euro forums definitely confirmed the issue was due to German Telecom Level3 routing. It is a long thread though, probably 70+ pages now, so have fun finding that particular post again.
Just a few points:

1. You changed ISPs and as I stated given feedback from one of my networking buddies (and this seems to be raised by some as well) it is quite possible there are some 'shaping' issues occuring due to ISPs trying to limit what they think is p2p traffic over tcp/udp. It may even be shaping by backhaul providers? Is that possible?

2. I would like a link to the conclusive post by Funcom re: that Level 3 is the problem. We have no handle on what proportion of users are on connections that go through level 3 and those that don't. We only have a handful of tracert data and I wouldn't call that absolutely conclusive either way. What do we have, 10-15 traceroutes listed? What about all the people with successful connections going through level 3? I think people have been hung up on level 3 because of tracert which stops before it hits funcom servers tbh.

3. Dodo is actually not the cheapest by any means. I should have stuck with iiNet instead of getting pissed off by them for their service at one point and jettisoning them in anger. Anyway, I have already been publicly shamed by this many times.

What I feel is being missed by discussions around this issue is the issue of why it seems that on both EU and US servers, changing from tcp to ppp seems to stop the issue, or keep it in check, anecdotally.

After all, it is the EU folks that pointed us towards VPN services.

No disrespect--I am just sick of Funcom leaving us to meander through the thousand possibilities out there without a peep.

Cheers

Hiloxia

I play on the Chimera pvp-rp server and the latency has been hitting 9000 or so lately. Now I thought this was my laptops fault. I just upgrade my XPS 1530 to 4 gig, harwired it to the router, and freed up start up programs. My laptop has the 8600 GT M video card and a 2.2 ghz core 2 duo processor. To my dismay the playabilty on this server is so bad. Lagging big time. What gives!!!

Hope that helps in any way, shape, or form.

Default fix

Ok...maybe this will help a few people, maybe it wont. Some things to try to fix the current issues people have been having with lag and high latency. I wrote this pretty quick and in minimal detail. If i get more time, i can elaborate / add links as needed. If you need help with any of it, feel free to post and me or somone else that is tech savy could help. Any other fixes that people have let me know so i can add them to the list.

Personally, below is the problem that I have been having the past few days. I built a BEASTLY gaming computer and was quite furious when I was getting random lag spikes everytime I entered battle. It would spike for only a few seconds, then go back to normal (none of the 10k constant lag, although I would occasionally get disconected). After countless various drivers, programs, and forums, I finally fixed my issue.

-There has been a known issue, for the periodic lag that occurs every minute or so and lasts a few seconds. This is mainly caused by Wireless Zero Configuration on XP and WLAN autoconfig on Vista. They scan for new wireless networks every minute, which cause your computer to "hiccup" and create little lag spikes that mainly are only noticable during battle. To fix this (XP only) go to the services (run - services) and stop / disable wireless zero configuration. On Vista, it's quite a bit more tricky. IF you simply end the WLAN autoconfig, you can't connect to any wireless networks. To remedy this situation, you can use a number of different utilities, such as Wlan optimizer and Vista Anti-lag. You may also need to mount different drivers (depending on your wireless card / usb's chipset) from different manufacturers as well as mount the XP drivers to get the above apps to work in some situations. You can also use batch scripts to disable the autoconfig feature once the network is connected.

There is no one set "fix" for this problem, it is a matter of trial and error. What i can say however, is only try one thing at a time. IE: First try WLAN optimizer, then try Vista Anti Lag(without WLAN optimizer running), then try both together, etc. Personally, what worked for me is a combination of the newest VISTA drivers form my Wireless, + the batch disable of autoconfig + WLAN optimizer. I'll try to get the links later so you guys don't have to google everything.

-Change drivers for your network card / motherboard (if using on board for network) This includes rolling back, getting newer ones, or even mounting the XP ones (if using vista). It WILL work in most instances -- I have done this multiple times with hardware that is incompatible with vista and still got it running.

-Try to isolate the problem. This includes doing things such as turning off ALL your startup items (msconfig - disable all startup items, then restart).I can't count the number of times ive had to deal with programs hindering other programs. Sometimes firewalls and whatnot can effect gameplay. If using a router, ping the router itself -- this can be done by typing 192.168.1.1 -t in to the command prompt (sometimes the ip will vary to 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.1. Also, you could try pinging a typical website such as http://www.google.com). Take a look at the response time on each packet sent. Typically this should be >1 - 12ms. If every minute or so you get a "Request timed out" or a repsponse time of 800 +, it's probably a good indication you have a problem with Wireless zero config listed above. If your response is all over the place, you probably have a problem with one of the scenarios below.

Also at this time, try other games -- see if the issue is just with AoC.

-Disable all firewalls. This includes the obvious windows firewall, any antivirus firewalls/protection you have running, ROUTER firewalls, etc. The firewalls on your computer, as well as the automatic router firewall could be blocking the ports needed for AoC.

-Talk to your ISP. Sometimes ISPs are utterly retar-ded about port blocking and security.

-Forward the ports for AoC on both your computer, as well as the router. Routers vary, so you might need to play around with the configurations to get it working correctly (typically you set a static IP for your computer, then go to the port forwarding section and forward the AoC ports (tcp) to your computer -- make sure to click the enable check box then apply it :P). May require restarts.

-Try different hardware. If wired, try a USB, if wireless, try to plug directly in or even a new wireless device. Your wireless device / driver could be bad and preventing you from playing.

-Also, some people have had some success with VPN. I personally have never used a VPN for gaming, but this is also worth looking into.
Let me know if any of this helps (or makes sense). It's kind of disorganized but i should be able to help more if you get stuck (worked at Harley-Davidson for two years as tech support :P. Heck, even if you have any other hardware / software issues you can PM me, post here, or just find me in game (Epix).
