Ok...maybe this will help a few people, maybe it wont. Some things to try to fix the current issues people have been having with lag and high latency. I wrote this pretty quick and in minimal detail. If i get more time, i can elaborate / add links as needed. If you need help with any of it, feel free to post and me or somone else that is tech savy could help. Any other fixes that people have let me know so i can add them to the list.
Personally, below is the problem that I have been having the past few days. I built a BEASTLY gaming computer and was quite furious when I was getting random lag spikes everytime I entered battle. It would spike for only a few seconds, then go back to normal (none of the 10k constant lag, although I would occasionally get disconected). After countless various drivers, programs, and forums, I finally fixed my issue.
-There has been a known issue, for the periodic lag that occurs every minute or so and lasts a few seconds. This is mainly caused by Wireless Zero Configuration on XP and WLAN autoconfig on Vista. They scan for new wireless networks every minute, which cause your computer to "hiccup" and create little lag spikes that mainly are only noticable during battle. To fix this (XP only) go to the services (run - services) and stop / disable wireless zero configuration. On Vista, it's quite a bit more tricky. IF you simply end the WLAN autoconfig, you can't connect to any wireless networks. To remedy this situation, you can use a number of different utilities, such as Wlan optimizer and Vista Anti-lag. You may also need to mount different drivers (depending on your wireless card / usb's chipset) from different manufacturers as well as mount the XP drivers to get the above apps to work in some situations. You can also use batch scripts to disable the autoconfig feature once the network is connected.
There is no one set "fix" for this problem, it is a matter of trial and error. What i can say however, is only try one thing at a time. IE: First try WLAN optimizer, then try Vista Anti Lag(without WLAN optimizer running), then try both together, etc. Personally, what worked for me is a combination of the newest VISTA drivers form my Wireless, + the batch disable of autoconfig + WLAN optimizer. I'll try to get the links later so you guys don't have to google everything.
-Change drivers for your network card / motherboard (if using on board for network) This includes rolling back, getting newer ones, or even mounting the XP ones (if using vista). It WILL work in most instances -- I have done this multiple times with hardware that is incompatible with vista and still got it running.
-Try to isolate the problem. This includes doing things such as turning off ALL your startup items (msconfig - disable all startup items, then restart).I can't count the number of times ive had to deal with programs hindering other programs. Sometimes firewalls and whatnot can effect gameplay. If using a router, ping the router itself -- this can be done by typing 192.168.1.1 -t in to the command prompt (sometimes the ip will vary to 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.1. Also, you could try pinging a typical website such as
http://www.google.com). Take a look at the response time on each packet sent. Typically this should be >1 - 12ms. If every minute or so you get a "Request timed out" or a repsponse time of 800 +, it's probably a good indication you have a problem with Wireless zero config listed above. If your response is all over the place, you probably have a problem with one of the scenarios below.
Also at this time, try other games -- see if the issue is just with AoC.
-Disable all firewalls. This includes the obvious windows firewall, any antivirus firewalls/protection you have running, ROUTER firewalls, etc. The firewalls on your computer, as well as the automatic router firewall could be blocking the ports needed for AoC.
-Talk to your ISP. Sometimes ISPs are utterly retar-ded about port blocking and security.
-Forward the ports for AoC on both your computer, as well as the router. Routers vary, so you might need to play around with the configurations to get it working correctly (typically you set a static IP for your computer, then go to the port forwarding section and forward the AoC ports (tcp) to your computer -- make sure to click the enable check box then apply it :P). May require restarts.
-Try different hardware. If wired, try a USB, if wireless, try to plug directly in or even a new wireless device. Your wireless device / driver could be bad and preventing you from playing.
-Also, some people have had some success with VPN. I personally have never used a VPN for gaming, but this is also worth looking into.
Let me know if any of this helps (or makes sense). It's kind of disorganized but i should be able to help more if you get stuck (worked at Harley-Davidson for two years as tech support :P. Heck, even if you have any other hardware / software issues you can PM me, post here, or just find me in game (Epix).
