I'll start off with saying i have no idea what could cause this but clarifying the problem in some further detail might help a bit.

When you say GUI do you mean the patcher will not run or the game itself fails to start from the patcher?

What happens when you start the game from AgeOfConan.exe in the game's program files?

Do you have the latest ati drivers?
what are you using for antivirus?
what exactly is the model of your video card?
are you trying to run the game on a notebook?
Did you install the game in the default location?

I have had Norton internet security hiccup on me before and not allow the game to start because of firewall issues, it would patch ok, but not run. ( just one of many issues that could be your problem).
