Some RP'ers prefer the PvP-envorinment since what you do and how you act there will usually have a consequence. If you're a complete muppet, you'll get your head chopped off. Thus RP-PvP tends to lead to a more "real" experience of cause and effect than what you'll find on an RP-PvE-server (not having the option to dismember someone when you're pissed off at them is somewhat tedious :P). Other Rp'ers prefer to not have that over their heads.

I don't think that Storytelling-RP (or Shakespearian RP, as I like to call it) is
NOT RP, but I do generally agree with you. I've seen some storylines played through very well, but for me, shakespearian RP just becomes far, far too boring. And it's not inclusive on the same level as freeform RP is (everyone can take a part without the fear of drawing massive ire due to disruption. It leaves people out, and tends to breed a very fragmented community with lots of small groups doing their thing. For some that's OK, but I still think that it's not a good way to promote a community, nor is it a good way to promote RP in general.
My personal preference is freeform RP, where you basically become your toon. That's what bring immersion into the mix, and to me, that's what RP should be like. I've had many a clash with those that say that the only form of RP is the shakespearian-type, however, and know that there are different opinions out there.
