I believe you will still need to update if you go that option. It's just the update will not be as big (3GB).

well the download is 14 gigs. game + expansion. and seeing as how you can download it now while the servers are down it seems like a wise bet. at this point you'll have at least 10 hours to download it while the servers are down. unless your bandwidth conscious,i think it better to download now and patch less than a gig when servers are up, rather than wait and patch a little over 3 gigs when the rest of the world is doing it.
