Now, let's be realistic on the literacy comment. First, I love Lovecraft, but let's be honost both of these men were pulp writers. It's very common to find literate people that have never heard of either one of these writers. Their appeal is more cult than a wide reaching literary impact on culture as a whole. I have yet to find Lovecraft or Howard on a library's top 100 list of books of the English language. If they do appear on one, I would really like to check out that library.
