If you like visual gear variety I would suggest staying away from Champions Online, Star Trek Online (when it is released) and Star Wars: The Old Republic. For the most part you are stuck with the cartoonier MMOs out there (in terms of graphics) and WoW is the most established in terms of visual gear variety (Although the Witch Hunter in WAR has some bad ass looking visual gear).

Seriously though if how "bad ass" you (the general you) look is one of the criteria for whether or not you play a game then a WoW or a WAR are better bets. I personally care little about the gear, I play AoC for the beauty of the world, the combat system and the Global chat (don't need Comedy Central for laughs anymore).

Lolwut? Have you seen the character creation for that game? You might not like the art style but the opportunities for creating a visually unique character is simply mind boggling. It has the most diverse set of options I've seen in any MMO to date.

I play it and love it, but you get 5 (unless you buy more) costume slots. I can see this pissing off some people who want the visual gear to show off. Besides, there is gear in CO, you just can't see it ... speaking of which I need to find a new piece of +32 recovery in my second heal slot my current only has 1.5 defense.

No, as shadow's said - you get options for multiple looks. I did not know that was restricted to 5 (default), but I also believe you can delete one, can't you? (I only played the free month) And with the ability to save template designs, etc. you have a lot of scope for changing your look at any time.

You can always go to the tailor and change your look, but it costs a lot of resources to do a complete makeover. Including Supergroup you get a total of 5 slots for costumes.

Edit: The thing I see with the variety asked for most of the time in this or most other MMOs is in terms of rare drops. It's so that not only does your character look but can also show of his/her e-peen and leetness.
